The myth surrounding Hitler being gay began in Munich. Desperate for a mentor, Rudolf Hess spent whatever time he could with Hitler in his jail cell in Munich's Landsburg Prison. He acted as secretary for "Mein Kampf", Hitler's rambling autobiography and treatise. Released from prison, Hess was rarely away from Hitler's side.
Hitler's detractors, whether Socialist, Communist or members of the government openly spread the rumor about the two men until Hitler insisted that Hess marry his long-term girl friend.
